Jamaal Bowman speaking in front of a crowd

Immigrants are our family, our neighbors, and our co-workers. We must open our arms and doors to those seeking asylum, especially considering our country’s hand in the disruption that has caused mass migrations. No one should live in fear of deportation. No one should have their children ripped from their arms and locked in a cage.

Immigrants do so much of the unrecognized, often grueling labor of our country and deserve to be treated with dignity and justice. We must completely unravel Trump’s white supremacist immigration agenda and reimagine our complex immigration system that’s been riddled with problems long before Trump.

Establish a Path to Citizenship and Protect DACA

Jamaal believes there must be path to citizenship and permanent protection from deportation for all 11 million undocumented Americans in our country.

The DREAM Act of 2001 offered a pathway to legal status to young, undocumented immigrants who were brought into the country as children. The Republican Party has made it their mission to dismantle DACA protections and deport legal Americans who have only known this country as their home. Dreamers deserve a pathway to citizenship and under no circumstance should their legal right to be in this country be revoked.

Pass the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights and Stop Wage Theft

We have to strengthen the labor rights of immigrants in our country and end exploitation. We must establish whistleblower protections for immigrant workers who report abusive or illegal actions by employers.
‍Domestic workers and caretakers have been historically excluded from many basic labor protections in our country. We must finally get rid of the racist and classist policies that continue to marginalize an essential and rapidly growing part of our workforce.

Humane Border and Visa Policy

We are turning away thousands of people who are fleeing danger and hardship. We must decriminalize immigration, end the detention of those seeking asylum and relief at our border, and eliminate all for-profit detention centers.
‍We must repeal the 10-year ban that blocks immigrants who have been deported from returning to their families in the United States.

We must also support a Marshall Plan for Central America that helps confront the root economic, political, and environmental roots of increased migration.

Abolish ICE

ICE is not making our nation safer. They were used as a rogue deportation force under President Trump, showing the structurally racist intent of the agency when it was founded by President Bush. We must end raids at schools, places of worship, hospitals, and so much more.
